The solar system is travelling through much stormier skies than we thought. Scientists have come to the conclusion that we have moved into an area of space that is different and has much higher energy level. They are reporting changes that are being recorded in space that have never seen before. That's the implication of a multi-decade survey of the interstellar wind buffeting the solar system which has revealed an unexpected change in the wind's direction. The fact that the wind is shifting over the span of mere decades, means that the interior of the cloud is either unusually turbulent or the solar system is a mere 1000 or so years away from punching its way out. Recent results obtained by NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer mission, suggest that neutral interstellar atoms flow into the solar system from different direction than found previously. Data from ESA's Cluster mission has provided a recording of the eerie "song" that Earth sings when it is hit by a solar storm. The song comes from waves that are generated in the Earth's magnetic field by the collision of the storm. The storm itself is the eruption of electrically charged particles from the sun's atmosphere. When the frequencies of these magnetic waves are transformed into audible signals, they give rise to an uncanny song that might recall more the sound effects of a science fiction movie than a natural phenomenon.
