Archaeologists have recently discovered a huge structure built from thousands of bones of dozens of woolly mammoths in Russia. Scientists say that an ancient cave drawing discovered in Iran depicts a half-man, half-mantis creature. The curious petroglyph was found a few years ago in the Teymareh region of the country where such rock carvings are fairly plentiful. However, this particular piece of artwork, which measures around five-and-a-half inches long, proved to be rather intriguing to experts as drawings of invertebrate animals are rarely seen. This has led to the conclusion that the work was meant to depict a human-mantis hybrid of sorts. Associate professor of anthropology Charles Golden and his colleagues have found the long-lost capital of an ancient Maya kingdom in the backyard of a Mexican cattle rancher. Among their findings is a trove of Maya monuments, one of which has an important inscription describing rituals, battles, a mythical water serpent and the dance of a rain god. They've also found remnants of pyramids, a royal palace and ball court. Golden and his fellow researchers believe the archaeological site, named Lacanja Tzeltal for the nearby modern community, was the capital of the Sak Tz'i' kingdom, located in what is today the state of Chiapas in southeastern Mexico. A series of hidden chambers at the 3,400-year-old tomb of Tutankhamun in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings could be the final resting place of 'mysterious' Queen Nefertiti. The famed female pharaoh ruled Egypt from 1353 to 1336 BC and was either mother or step-mother to King Tut - Egyptology believed she was laid to rest in the Valley of the Kings but her tomb has never been found. A team of archaeologists, led by former Egyptian minister of antiquities, Mamdouh Eldamaty from Ain Shams University, used ground penetrating radar (GPR) to uncover the hidden secrets of the ancient tomb. The mummified elongated head of a newborn baby belonging to the ancient Paracas culture has been found in Peru. The finding was announced by Brien Foerster of Hidden Inca Tours , who reports that the baby died approximately 2,000 to 2,800 years ago, and was between 0 and 3 months old. The hair of the baby has been preserved and, like many of the Paracas skulls that have been recovered, is auburn in color, which is inconsistent with the typical black color of the indigenous people. The vertebral column of the baby is further to the back of the skull than normal, which Foerster says “could well indicate an evolutionary adaptation to compensate for the elongated skull”. Archaeologists in Mexico have uncovered a small treasure trove of items that may have been placed as offerings to mark the start of construction on the Teotihuacan Pyramid of the Sun almost 2,000 years ago. Perhaps most striking are three human figurines made out of a green stone, one of which is a serpentine mask that researchers think may have been a portrait. Archaeologists have unearthed a secret Aztec tunnel that has been hiding under the bustling streets outside of Mexico City for more than 600 years. Experts say it was once located in front of the temple where the earliest historical accounts describe the final resting place of Aztec kings, including Ahuitzotl. The black rectangular object was located in a burial site known as ‘The Russian Atlantis’ in mountainous Republic of Tuva, for it only appears from under water for few weeks a year. The discovery which resembled a modern smartphone is a large - 18cm by 9cm - chic belt buckle made of gemstone jet with inlaid decorations of turquoise, carnelian and mother-of-pearl.
