Extreme heat during Vesuvius eruption 'turned victim's brain into glass'

When Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD79, the damage wreaked in nearby towns was catastrophic. Now it appears the heat was so immense it turned one victim’s brain to glass – thought to be the first time this has been seen.

Experts say they have discovered that splatters of a shiny, solid black material found inside the skull of a victim at Herculaneum appear to be the remains of human brain tissue transformed by heat.

Writing in the New England Journal of Medicine, Petrone and colleagues reveal that the glassy brains belonged to a man of about 25 who was found in the 1960s lying face-down on a wooden bed under a pile of volcanic ash – a pose that suggests he was asleep when disaster struck the town.

Watch bizarre-looking Sea Creature from the Deep caught in Texas

An angler in Texas snagged a bizarre-looking sea creature that turned out to be a venomous denizen of the deep. The strange catch was reportedly made by Alyssa Ramirez while she and her mother were fishing on a pier in the coastal city of Port Isabel. Adding an almost alien-like element to the oddity's appearance, it was still alive when Ramirez reeled it in and, as such, was undulating in a mesmerizing fashion on the pier, She decided to record footage of the creature and send it off to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in the hopes that they could identify it.
