Ancient Maya kingdom unearthed in a backyard in Mexico

Associate professor of anthropology Charles Golden and his colleagues have found the long-lost capital of an ancient Maya kingdom in the backyard of a Mexican cattle rancher.

Among their findings is a trove of Maya monuments, one of which has an important inscription describing rituals, battles, a mythical water serpent and the dance of a rain god. They've also found remnants of pyramids, a royal palace and ball court.

Golden and his fellow researchers believe the archaeological site, named Lacanja Tzeltal for the nearby modern community, was the capital of the Sak Tz'i' kingdom, located in what is today the state of Chiapas in southeastern Mexico. It was likely first settled by 750 B.C.E. and then occupied for over 1,000 years.

Flocks consisting of thousands of grackles invaded a Houston City shopping centre parking lot in Texas. Footage of the incident features thousands of grackles taking over a Kroger grocery store parking area, while also resting on power lines and cars. “This is just crazy. Researchers at the SETI Institute have launched a major new search for alien life

Scientists uses the latest techniques to scour the skies in the hope of finding data that could be an indication of extraterrestrial intelligence. And they will also make the data from their searches available to the public in the hope that citizen scientists can spot potential evidence in what they have found. The researchers at the SETI Institute, which is devoted to looking for alien life, are hunting for "technosignatures", or hints in the data that suggest they could be coming from planets that are home to other beings. They could be anything from sniffing hints of chemicals on alien worlds to indications that there could be structures or lasers on other planets.
